𝓓o you know what is the difference between habit and ritual?
We all live among thousand routines ⟳ or habits that we carry on for months or years. Think about when we have breakfast, when we get dressed, when we shower, when we do house cleaning, and so on. These are all activities that we carry out almost automatically, without total reflection or awareness.
The substantial difference between habit and ritual is the 𝒾𝓃𝓉𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃, the approach with which we carry out the activities of our day.
Habit or routine does not require concentration and in fact it is said that we do it in over-thought, that is, out of our awareness and out of ourselves.
The ritual, on the contrary, is an important moment that requires the decision to take place – it is an action that we carry out in full awareness with the attention paid within us.
Let's not misunderstand, both habits and rituals are important for our lives. We will not be able to live without some habits such as eating or sleeping, but we can transform some of our habits into real rituals, for example doing physical activity or meditating, or even taking a shower.
Doing a ritual means doing something that has a deeper meaning for us, which we intentionally attribute to them.
Being fully present in what we do can improve our health, the quality of our relationships, it can improve our memory, the mood, the quality of sleep. Indeed, some research has shown that many physical and mental problems derive from not having ritualistic moments. Those moments that allow us to experience mindfulness – full awareness of ourselves.
If we can turn some of our habits into rituals, we can improve the quality of our 𝒽𝑒𝒶𝓁𝓉𝒽.
But how do you turn you habits into rituals?
The next time you have breakfast, try to be aware of your every move: try to concentrate on perceiving the warmth of the cup of your coffee, try to feel its aroma that enters the nostrils, feel how the sip slowly descends into the throat. You can apply this technique to any activity of your day, even to house cleaning. Just intentionally focus on what you are doing and feel every single action.
